This is pretty sad. This morning it hit the twitter feed that the Beastie Boys have canceled their upcoming shows, including Lollapalooza which is coming up in a few weeks here in the Chicago. Adam Yauch has “a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland.” The cancer is treatable and will not effect his vocal chords, but the guy is stuck dealing with this and we’re out a headliner for Lollapalooza.
Here’s the taped message from Yauch featured on the home page of Beastieboys.com:
Time for the folks over at C3 Productions to start putting their heads together. Beastie Boys were a large crowd favorite for the upcoming festival and with their cancellation there is an obvious hole in Saturday evening’s acts. Rage Against the Machine is not on the Lolla schedule this year, but is touring with Rise Against who is on the Lolla bill – leaving last year’s closer in the Chicago area and with a night off.
*Correction: RATM is not on tour this summer.
Tool as the only closer and RATM on opposite sides of the park would leave me chilling with Bassnectar at Perry’s stage hiding from all the scary music listeners. If you haven’t caught on by know, I hate screaming music with an edge.
As per the usual, @lollapalooza is tweeting about crap while the rest of the music world gushes over this crushing news. Oh wait, at least amongst all the Beastie Boy updates, we know what’s going on the Kidz stage:
@lollapalooza Never 2 young 2 rock. Quinn Sullivan, 10yr old prodigy will be @ #Lolla –> http://bit.ly/30bHeQ He’ll be on the Kidz stage on Sat @ 1:30. 9 minutes ago from twhirl
It would be nice if the festival made some sort of statement.
dude seriously….Rage against the machine is on tour with rise against?
NO THEY ARE NOT. they ar on tour with Rancid.
what kind of journalist are you?
you lack any real skill at any reporting/blogging.
RATM has not played on American soil since lollapalooza last year. and they havent even toured as a band since last year. IN FACT guitarist Tom Morello is out on tour right now with his side project- street sweeper social club.
so get a clue, do some research….and dont post incorrect shit on the internet.
GET A REAL JOB cuz u suck at this one. and your probly gonna get sued by RATM’s managment for printing false information.
IN FACT im going to email them this article right now just so you get screwed.
I really enjoy comments like this. I don’t usually approve comments in which the person does not include their name, but this person included their email, so at least he might be amusing to argue with today. So to Reader, “your stupid” – here’s my rebuttal to your post.
Author : your stupid
This is the definition of “your”:
1 : of or relating to you or yourself or yourselves especially as possessor or possessors , agent or agents , or object or objects of an action
2 : of or relating to one or oneself
3 : used with little or no meaning almost as an equivalent to the definite article the
I think you were trying to call ME stupid. But that would be “you’re stupid”, as in the contraction, “you are”. Therefore, I think you are the stupid one, seeing as you don’t know the difference between the two usages.

You are right – actually Rise Against is on tour with Rancid. I have corrected my lack of fact checking. Actually, I think all three: RATM, Rise Against, and Rancid are horrible noise – not music. I don’t follow them and don’t listen to them. My source was my gentleman friend who is in the music industry and he made a mistake. To which has been corrected on my blog.

I’m not a journalist, I’m a blogger. I actually was accepted to the University of Iowa’s Journalism School as my 3rd major, but after taking 4 classes, I decided to graduate early instead because I didn’t like the course material or the program. No where on this blog do I count myself as a credible news source. I started this blog called “opinions” in an effort to to facilitate my own opinions about music, pop culture, Chicago, my life and friends, and other stupid shit I run into in life. As most blogs, my words are my opinions and speculations.
Here are a few creditable music blogs for you to refer to. As I said, for up-to-date, fully credible music and news sources, I would refer to these rather than a free wordpress blog from some kid in Chicago:
Paste Magazine, NPR’s Music Blogs, Pitchfork Media, JamBase – which is really only naming a few and are impartial to my favorites.

Alright, you caught me and just like any other blogger, the corrections have been made on the original post. Here’s the thing, if you accept everything on the internet as fact, you need to get a clue as well. Remember the day that Patrick Swayze DIED on twitter before it was confirmed?

I actually work at Weber Shandwick, the largest international Public Relations firm. I work on this small campaign you might have heard of as the got milk? campaign. Yeah, it’s a national campaign that’s sort of well known. And like any other full time employed adult, I get here everyday work my 8-10 hours and go home. The great thing about Weber is they recognize in this day of social media the importance of blogging, so as long as I still get my work done, I can blog freely at work. Every two weeks I also get one of those things called paychecks.
Anyways, I’m not going to be sued by RATM’s management. First of all, I would be sued by their lawyers. Second of all, facts are misprinted online and offline all the time. When you pitch a story to a reporter or a blogger, you can only hope that your story is reported correctly, if it isn’t, you ask for the reporter or blogger to correct the incorrect information in their next post. This is the nature of PR and reporting. This is one aspect of what my company does.
This is also not grounds for legal action. That’s just silly.
Look, I’m sure you’re some RATM fanatic and I’d probably write as passionate of a response if someone was ill reporting about Phish. However, this is my blog, with my opinions. It sounds like maybe you need to get a venue for your opinions as well.
Sorry Ali…..this sucks for you, but I personally love this news!
Creepy – don’t say that you love that someone has cancer.
I love that the Beasties are no longer playing at Lolla, not that someone has cancer.
I also love your response to the first comment – hilarious….
do you love that yeah yeah yeahs have taken the place?
odd replacement, if i do say so myself
I’m horribly disappointed with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as a replacement. They were mediocre during their 2007 set at Lollapalooza. They also aren’t the caliber of a band to be HEADLINING on Saturday night at a major music festival.
Here’s the thing – Jay-Z is replacing a crap ton of the Beasties dates, including at the All Points West Festival on July 31st. Jay-Z IS a headliner. He is someone who through the variety in his work and the quantity of his music has proven to be of headliner status. Jay-Z would have also allowed for a hip hop set to replace a hip hop set.
Here’s my problem. I have the 2008 Lolla poster hanging directly within eyesight of when I lay in bed. Headliners: Radiohead, Rage Against the Machines, Kanye West, NIN – while you might not like the music of one of these, you can’t argue that they are all headliner worthy. This year we have: Kings of Leon, Depeche Mode, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tool, The Killers, and Janes Addiction. They don’t compare and they truly speak to an older audience. And here’s the thing – while Bassnectar is raw and I gladly support him, I’m forced to close Saturday night at the Perry Stage because I just have no interest in Tool or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Overall this is the weakest Lolla – it’s all good, we got the $60 tickets and there are a handful of bands on the bill over the weekend that I would probably pay $60 just to see that single band.
Bassnectar in to STS9 late show will be a pretty raging saturday, at least.
